This is the first version of the A404, with 15 jewels and non-shockproofed balance, with the cruciform cut out in the dust cover/case ring enabling easier regulation. The chrome pasting is very worn and some toning and spotting to the original dial. Looks better in person.
The case width excluding the crown is about 33.4mm. The thickness is 10mm. The strap is 18mm.
The A404 is famous because Smiths used it in the main post Everest advert saying that the watch was used for the Everest expedition, and also because both the A404 and A454 / 460 became expedition watches in their own right shortly afterwards.
The Hillary version which was based on the series of cases used in the contemporary model with Roman numerals, was generally referred to By Smiths as an A404, even though it was a model not reproduced exactly as in his one for general use, so Smiths used a bit of artistic license when marketing the A 404.
This version has the slimmer case back type with the Dennison signature outside the case. Movement c122615, dates to around 52/3. Caliber 12-15. Case number 86441. Stamped DQ for Dennison quality, with the name Denisteel for the alloy used.
The ZRC strap has the coronet on the buckle almost matching that on the SMITHS DIAL.
